My other considerations are Grant Morrison's New X-Men ...Giant-Size X-Men (1975) #1 - This is where the omnibus you mentioned started. It's the beginning of Claremont's epic run and is when the series was revitalized, introducing characters such as Storm, Wolverine, and Nightcrawler. Excellent place to start. New X-Men (2001) #114 - This is the beginning of Morrison's run.
