The key illumination ring should come on when the driver door is opened and slowly fade down or go out when the key is turned to ON. It will also come on when the keyless entry remote is used to unlock the doors (as should the interior cabin light).Assuming the '16 is the same, a little lint in the lever gate is all it takes to prevent the lever from going all the way into position to trigger the switch.
